A rich and sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo dough filled with nuts and sweetened with syrup.

450 g phyllo dough
225 g butter
Syrup
200 g white sugar
2.4 dl water
1.2 dl honey
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp finely grated lemon zest

Preparation: Make sure you have all ingredients ready before you start cooking.

Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F and butter a baking dish.

Combine chopped nuts and cinnamon in a bowl and set aside.

Unroll the phyllo dough and cut to fit the baking dish, keeping sheets covered.

Layer 2 sheets of phyllo in the dish, brush with melted butter, and sprinkle with nut mixture. Repeat until ingredients are used, finishing with 6 layers of phyllo on top.

Cut through all layers into diamond shapes.

Bake for about 2700 seconds until deeply golden and crisp.

Combine sugar and water in a saucepan, bring to a boil, then add honey, vanilla, and lemon zest. Simmer for about 1200 seconds until slightly thickened.

Remove baklava from the oven and spoon hot syrup evenly over the hot pastry.

Allow to cool completely before serving.
